What’s In a Name? Sharon

Have you heard of the “rose of Sharon?” The newly elected Prime Minister of Israels’ name has interesting Biblical implications. ( It is pronounced with a long o).
Sharon is a beautiful place between Joppa and Mt. Carmel. Along the seacoast, it is a place where herds of animals graze. The “rose of Sharon” mentioned in Song of Solomon 2:1 is thought to be something like our crocus.
“And they dwelt in Gilead in Bashan, and in her towns and in all the suburbs of Sharon upon their borders”. (I Chronicles 5:16) Sharon refers to the pasture lands east of the Jordon near Bashan. People who lived there were called “Sharonites.” “And over the herds that fed in Sharon was Shitrai the Sharonite:” (I Chronicles 27:29)
“…And to half the tribe of Manasseh spake Joshua, saying, …The Lord your God hath given you rest, and hath given you this land. Your wives, your little ones, shall remain here, …but…your brethren armed, all the mighty men of valour, shall pass before your brethren, over Jordan, until the Lord have given your brethren rest as He hath given you…then ye shall return unto the land of your possession, and enjoy it, which Moses the Lord’s servant gave you on this side Jordan toward the sunrising.” (Joshua 1:12-18) The half tribe of Manasseh inherited this land. This is the tribe that helped Joshua against the Canaanites.
At a time of Judgment on the land, “Sharon is like a wilderness (desert plain), and Bashan and Carmel shake off their fruits (lose their foliage).” (Isaiah 33:9) Judgment came upon the land if they forgot God and His commandments. Please read the following Scripture, (I Chronicles 5:25-26). Lack of rain caused this fertile pasture to suffer.
When David was King, he appointed herdsmen to care for the flocks in Sharon. This was at a time when the Lord had given rest to His people, so they could “dwell in Jerusalem forever” (I Chronicles 23:25). The land belonged to David and his sons.
Let us seek God and pray for this new leader in Israel that “The wilderness…shall be glad…the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose. …the glory of Lebanon shall be given unto it, the excellency of Carmel and Sharon, they shall see the glory of the Lord, and the excellency of our God. …Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompence; …and the parched ground shall become a pool, and the thirsty land springs of water: … And an highway shall be there, ...called The way of holiness; …and the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.” (Isaiah 35) will be fulfilled in THIS day… also “And I will bring forth a seed out of Jacob, and out of Judah an inheritor of my mountains: and mine elect shall inherit it, and my servants shall dwell there. And Sharon shall be a fold of flocks, and the valley of Achor a place of the herds to lie down in, for my people that have sought me” (Isaiah 65:9-10). -
