BRIDGES FOR PEACE, Teaching Letter:

Jerusalem was the place where God dwelled in His Temple. Jerusalem was, and is, both the religious and political center of Israel and the destination of the pilgrimages of God’s people. After the second Temple was destroyed Jews were exiled from the city by the Romans. Despite a valiant revolt against the Romans (AD 133-135) the Romans changed the name of Jerusalem to Aelia Capitolina and the Jews were forbidden from entering their ancient capital, except for one day a year to mourn the destruction of both Temples. As the Jews celebrated Passover every year in exile, the prayer on their lips was, “Next year in Jerusalem.”

In 1948 when the sovereign state of Israel was established, the Arab and Moslem world fought against the development, launching numerous wars. In the 1967 Six Day War, Jerusalem came under complete Jewish sovereignty, read Luke 21:24. “Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled”. Today the Palestinian’s Phased Program is designed to take Israel, piece by piece. The world seems to forget that Jerusalem is the historical capital and central place of worship only to the Jewish people.

Pagan groups have worked to conquer Jerusalem to stifle God’s message. That is why the Roman Emperor Hadrian changed the name of Jerusalem to Aelia Capitolina. He was considered a god, so in changing the name of Jerusalem to Aelia Capitolina (naming it after his family name) and Israel to Palestine, he was trying to erase God’s claim. In the 7th century AD the Moslems conquered Jerusalem and immediately established a mosque on the site of God’s ancient temple. Now Jerusalem is claimed as the capital of three monotheistic religions, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Allah of Islam is not the God of the Bible. In the Bible, God is called, “the God of Israel” over 200 times. Psalm 83: 4-6, says that nations come to take the Land of Israel. “Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance. For they have consulted together with one consent: they are confederate against thee”. God responds to defend Israel if she will stand strong.

God is angry at the way the nations have disregarded and dishonored His land and His people, Israel. He is angry that they have divided up the land, and mistreated the Jewish people, who are called “the apple of His eye” (Zechariah 2:8).

Water Lilies (nymphae) will restore the purity of rivers and water polluted with poisonous heavy metals and treat water from household or industrial sources, experiment at Jerusalem’s Hebrew University show. An experimental station at the Haifa municipal waste water plant, tested the purification capabilities of the water lily, and showed a marked reduction of cadmium in the water.

Following rumors of a miraculous flow of water coming from the Temple Mount, staff members of Bridges for Peace, Tom and Becky Brimmer, checked it out. Their report is: “On top if the Temple Mount there is no water flowing… At the El-Aksa Mosque there was no water there…At the Dome of the Rock, where they actually went in and under the rock, and walked in our socks, there was no water… Outside the Eastern Gate, there were two hoses pumping a trickle of water… Down on the Western Wall a trickle of water on the Men’s side was dripping into a paper cup”. There will be streams or rivers of water flowing from the Temple Mount as predicted in Ezekiel 47 and Zechariah 14:8-9; when Messiah returns.

Underwater archeologists have discovered a fault-line in the bedrock of the basin harbor of Caesarea. Historical records show the region was hit by quakes in ancient times. The divers had looked for two huge towers that stood at the entrance of the ancient port, built by Herod (between 22 and 10 BCE) and they found the stone base of one of the statues described by Josephus. The level of the rock surface along the fault line, is 4 meters lower on one side.

An in-flight money-changing machine, which El-Al (Israel’s national airline) pioneered on its flights abroad, is now being sought by other airlines. Passengers like them so much that El-Al now has them on all flights.

Another 23 children arrived in Israel on Chabad’s Children of Chernobyl (CCOC) 43rd flight. The children come from areas in the Ukraine and Belarus contaminated by the 1996 Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Gomel, the Belarussian city, has the highest rate of thyroid cancer. This flight brings the total number of children brought to Israel by Chabad to 1,773.

If Ethiopian Jewry is, as some believe one of the Ten-Lost-Tribes, then the Jews of Quara have been the most deserted of the lost. When Israel airlifted 14,000 Ethiopian Jews in 24 hours (May 91) the Quara Jews were left behind, since their province was under rebel control and they could not take part in “Operation Solomon”… The following year 3,500 Ethiopian Jews were brought to Israel and now all are home. The Ethiopian government relented and allowed them to leave provided there was no publicity and they were to fly on regular scheduled Ethiopian Airlines flights.

Excerpts from Rabbi J. Simcha Cohen:   Avraham was originally called Avram, and his name was changed at a later date (Genesis 17:5); …Yaakov’s birth name was also subsequently changed to Yisrael (Genesis 35:10). At no time however was Yitzhak’s name altered from the one given to him at birth.

Each Patriarch represented the historical emergence of a special new quality, each symbolized a unique first. Abraham was the first considered to become a Jew. Yitzhak was known as the first person to be born a Jew. Yaakov was the first to father a complete Jewish family, namely, one wherein all the children stayed within the fold. Yitzhak, the name given to him at his birth could not and would not be changed. [God had already named him, Genesis 17:19], (Ed. Note: Strictly speaking these were Hebrews. The term “Jew” comes from Judah, the largest tribe returning from Babylon).

The Haifa District Labor Court reached a precedent-setting-decision. The Aloniel Company which operates the Israeli branches of McDonald’s were found guilty of employing Jewish youth on the Shabbat. According to the Youth Employment Laws, a Jewish youth is not allowed to work on Shabbat. Non-Jewish youth are allowed to choose between Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for their weekly day off.

Jewish groups are stepping up their criticism of Pope Pius XII’s role during the Holocaust as the Vatican continues to consider the WWII era pontiff for sainthood. Documents show that Pius’ representative warned President Franklin Roosevelt against the creation of a state for the “Hebrew Race” in Palestine and said he had no complaints about the Nazi occupation of Rome. Many groups continue to pressure the Vatican to open its archives for a full examination of its actions during WWII.

A former congressional analyst told the House Science Subcommittee on Space and Aeronautics that Iran, with help from Russia, has developed an intercontinental ballistic missile that is aimed at the USA. Russians have ignored the Clinton Administration efforts to stop the flow of Russian technology to Iran. When Russian officials hear complaints by American counterparts of their transferring technology, they plug up the leaks of information to prevent further monitoring by Washington. China has been a main supplier of technology, including a magnetic isotope separation device to enrich nuclear weapons.
